Stuart Lancaster insisted his England team is ready to win the World Cup after seeing them dismantle Ireland 21-13 in their final warm-up match at Twickenham.

Jonny May and Anthony Watson were England’s try heroes as they beat the Six Nations champions.

RFU director of professional rugby Rob Andrew said last week he believes Lancaster’s men have three more years ahead of them before they reach their peak.

But after watching his side score two fine tries to outplay Ireland, Lancaster said: ‘It’s a results based business I understand that. But I think this team is ready, yes.

‘There are six or seven teams who could win it and whoever does win it is going to have to put together a run of six or seven performances for seven games on the bounce.

‘That’s our challenge. But playing at Twickenham the way we did today, we’re a hard team to beat.’

England’s confident mood is in stark contrast to that of pool rivals Wales, who go into the World Cup under a cloud following a double injury blow.

They lost Rhys Webb to a suspected broken ankle and Leigh Halfpenny with a knee problem in their 23-19 win over Italy.
